Ensure consistent electrical performance and minimise risk from voltage spikes with the Popular Electric WCU8-C 4P 40kA SPD, your dependable solution for all-around surge protection.

The WCU8-C Surge Protection Device delivers reliable protection against transient over-voltages caused by lightning strikes, power grid fluctuations, and electrical switching surges.
Engineered to handle a maximum discharge current of 40kA, the WCU8-C ensures the safe operation of electrical infrastructure by efficiently suppressing surge energy at the main power entry point or terminal protection level.
It plays a critical role in step-down protection strategies, lowering the over-voltage category to safeguard downstream devices such as televisions, audio systems, HVAC units, computers, and other sensitive electronics.
The modular design allows seamless integration with digital and analog protective systems, making it ideal for residential, commercial, and light industrial installations requiring comprehensive surge protection across all four wires (L1, L2, L3, N) in a three-phase + neutral system.
Application: Lightning and surge protection for three-phase power systems
Protection Scope: TV sets, computers, HVAC units, sound systems, and other digital electronics
Integration: Compatible with modular and digital protection schemes

The WCU8-C steps the discharge current class up to 40 kA Imax (8/20 µs) compared with 20 kA on the WCU8-D, so it absorbs larger and more frequent surge energy. Both are 4P Type 2 DIN-rail SPDs for three-phase boards, but the WCU8-C is aimed at heavier-duty locations — long overhead feeds, exposed sites, industrial or commercial buildings — while the WCU8-D suits standard residential and light loads. Choose the C-series where lightning exposure or switching activity is higher.
Imax is the maximum 8/20 µs peak surge current the SPD can survive once. A 40 kA Imax device can absorb roughly double the single-shot energy of a 20 kA unit, giving greater margin in high-surge environments. It does not change the mains voltage or your normal current; it only matters during transient events. Pair it with a correspondingly sized upstream backup disconnector.
Up is the clamping (residual) voltage the SPD lets through to the load during a surge. A lower Up means tighter protection for sensitive electronics. On a 40 kA Type 2 arrester the Up is typically in the 1.5–2.5 kV range, which is adequate for general commercial and industrial loads; for servers, PLCs or precision instrumentation, add a coordinated Type 3 SPD closer to the equipment to bring the clamped voltage even lower.
Type 1 sits at the service entrance to handle direct lightning current (10/350 µs, Iimp); Type 2 in distribution boards handles switching and induced surges (8/20 µs); Type 3 is point-of-use, near sensitive equipment. The WCU8-C 40kA is a Type 2 stage. In a fully protected three-phase building it is installed downstream of any Type 1 entrance arrester, and any Type 3 devices should sit downstream of it, with Up values coordinated down the chain.
Yes. A 4P SPD protects L1, L2, L3 and N in a three-phase four-wire (TN-S/TN-CS/TT) supply in a single modular unit. It clamps phase-to-earth and phase-to-neutral surges simultaneously across all three legs. If your site is genuinely single-phase, use a 1P or 1P+N model instead; 4P is the correct selection for factories, offices, retail units and machinery with three-phase power.
It diverts indirect lightning surges induced on incoming overhead lines, and internal switching transients from large motor starts, transformer switching, contactor operation, capacitor banks and variable-frequency drives. As a Type 2 device it does not intercept direct lightning strike current (10/350 µs), which requires a Type 1 arrester at the entrance; it handles the residual energy that reaches the distribution board.
Clip the 4P unit onto a 35 mm DIN rail in the main or sub distribution board, wire it in parallel across L1/L2/L3/N and PE with short, straight leads under roughly 0.5 m, and bond it firmly to the earth bar. Install the manufacturer-recommended backup overcurrent device (gPD/fuse or MCB) ahead of the SPD so that a SPD short-circuit failure cannot itself become a hazard. All wiring and earthing must be to local code.
Green indicates the thermal disconnector is closed and the varistor is healthy; red (or a tripped flag) means the built-in thermal protection has disconnected the failed varistor and the SPD is no longer offering protection. Replace the pluggable module immediately, even though the rest of the installation keeps running. After a major thunderstorm or a known surge event, inspect all four pole modules and replace any that show red.
It is suited to commercial and industrial three-phase installations such as factories, workshops, server rooms, retail stores, hotels, schools and apartment mains boards, especially where the supply includes overhead sections or the site sits in a lightning-prone region. It is also appropriate where heavy machinery, welders, lifts or large motors create frequent switching transients. For a simple underground-supply domestic board, the 20 kA WCU8-D is usually sufficient.
It is designed and type-tested to IEC 61643-11 for low-voltage surge protective devices (with local equivalent standards where required). Maintenance consists of quarterly-to-annual visual checks of the status windows, a verified earth bond, and replacement of any module showing red; after severe storm seasons or major surge events, record the condition. A qualified electrician can also perform periodic resistance/insulation checks on the SPD circuit using appropriate test equipment.
