Westhomes ACB and MCCB circuit breaker product series overview

WCM8 series moulded case circuit breaker (MCCB for short) is one of updated type MCCBs researched and developed by the company by using advanced design and manufacture technology internationally. The rated insualted voltage is 800V (500V for WCM1-63). It applies for infrequent switch of the line of AC 50Hz, rated operation voltage 690V and below (400V for WCM1-63), and for infrequent starting of the motor. The MCCB with overload, short circuit and under-voltage protection fitting can protect the line and power device
from damage. The MCCB is classified into four types individually as Type C (low breaking), Type L (standard), Type M (higher breaking), Type H (very high breaking) according to the rated ultimate short circuit breaking capacity (Icu) ranking. The MCCB is small in volume, high breaking capacity, short flashover (zero flashover of some spare parts), and vibration resistance, is the ideal product for using on land and at ship. The MCCB can be installed verticall (vertical mounting), and horizontally (horizontal mounting).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION (FAQ)

What is an MCCB and how does it work? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

MCCB stands for Moulded Case Circuit Breaker, a low-voltage protective device that combines overload and short-circuit protection inside a moulded insulating housing. It uses a thermal bimetal element for overload protection (time-delayed tripping as current rises above rated current) and an electromagnetic solenoid for instantaneous short-circuit tripping. When either element operates, it releases a stored-energy mechanism that opens the contacts and extinguishes the arc inside the sealed case.

What does the "WCM8 Series 125A 3P" rating mean? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

WCM8 is the Westhomes product series designation, 125A is the rated current (In) the breaker can carry continuously without tripping, and 3P means three poles for a three-phase supply. The 125A figure refers to the frame/rated current; within a WCM8 frame smaller ratings (e.g., 15A through 125A) may share the same case size. The breaker is selected so the load current stays below 125A under normal operation.

How does the thermal-magnetic trip unit decide when to trip? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The thermal bimetal bends slowly as overcurrent heats it, tripping inversely faster as the current rises (e.g., 1.3 × In may trip in under an hour, while several × In trips in seconds). The magnetic coil trips near-instantly when current exceeds the magnetic threshold Im, which detects short circuits. This dual curve means small overloads are allowed to ride through, while large faults are cleared immediately.

Are the trip settings adjustable on a WCM8 125A? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Many WCM8 125A frames offer an adjustable long-time pickup (Ir) dial that lets the user set the overload trip point between, for example, 0.8 and 1.0 × In, while the magnetic short-circuit threshold (Im) is often fixed or set in steps. Adjusting Ir lets the breaker match the actual cable rating and starting characteristics of the load without changing frame size. Settings must be chosen so the breaker trips before the cable or equipment is damaged.

What is breaking capacity and why is it critical? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Breaking capacity (Icu/Ics), stated in kA at 400/415V, is the maximum fault current the breaker can safely interrupt without destruction. If the available short-circuit current at the panel exceeds the breaker's rating, the breaker may fail to clear the fault and sustain an arc. Always calculate the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point and select an MCCB with an Icu equal to or higher than that value.

How is a 3P WCM8 125A MCCB installed? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

It is typically panel-mounted on a mounting plate or on a DIN rail within a distribution board, with supply cables or busbars connected to the line terminals and load conductors to the load terminals. The three phases are connected across the three poles, and the neutral is not switched unless a 4P version is used. Installation should follow the wiring diagram on the nameplate, with proper torque and cable lugs, by a qualified electrician.

Which IEC standard governs this MCCB? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

It is designed and tested to IEC 60947-2, "Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear — Part 2: Circuit-breakers," which defines the thermal-magnetic and electronic trip tests, breaking capacity ratings (Icu/Ics), and utilization categories. CE marking on the product confirms conformity to the relevant EU low-voltage and EMC directives, while a CB test certificate provides international cross-market acceptance.

What are typical applications for a 125A 3P MCCB? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

It is commonly used as a main or sub-main breaker in three-phase distribution boards, for protecting motor feeders, HVAC units, compressors, pumps, and larger three-phase socket circuits. A 125A frame sits between the small MCB range (typically ≤125A but fixed trips) and the larger power MCCB/ACB range. It is well suited where adjustable protection or a high breaking capacity is needed within a compact frame.

How does an MCCB differ from an MCB? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

An MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) is DIN-rail mounted, usually rated up to 125A with fixed trip curves (B/C/D), and is covered by IEC 60898-1. An MCCB offers higher breaking capacities (commonly 16–50 kA), adjustable trip settings, larger frame sizes up to several thousand amps, and panel or busbar mounting. Where fault currents or adjustable selectivity are required, an MCCB is chosen over an MCB.

How does an MCCB differ from an Air Circuit Breaker (ACB)? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

An ACB is used for very high currents—typically 630A up to 6300A and above—often as the main incoming breaker in large substations and switchrooms, and is commonly draw-out with extensive auxiliary contacts and communications. An MCCB covers roughly 15A to 1600A in a moulded case, used for feeders and sub-mains. In a typical installation the ACB sits at the top of the switchboard and MCCBs protect the outgoing feeders downstream.
