FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION (FAQ)

What is a high speed circuit breaker (WCM9Z) and how does it differ from a standard MCCB? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The WCM9Z is a specially designed circuit breaker engineered to clear short-circuit faults in a fraction of the time of a conventional MCCB. While a standard MCCB typically trips in 30–50 milliseconds, the WCM9Z achieves tripping in roughly 10 milliseconds or less — often within the first half-cycle of the fault. This ultra-fast operation limits the peak let-through current (I²t) and drastically reduces mechanical and thermal stress on busbars, transformers, cables, and connected equipment.

What current range does the WCM9Z cover, and which frame sizes are available? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The WCM9Z series covers rated currents from 100A up to 630A, giving it broad coverage for low-voltage feeders, mains incomers, and high-value branch circuits. Within this range, multiple frame sizes and rated currents are offered so that engineers can match the breaker precisely to the load and fault level of the installation. ODM/OEM options allow the current range to be tailored to specific project requirements.

How does the WCM9Z achieve such fast fault clearing? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The WCM9Z uses an advanced electromagnetic/repulsion-driven release mechanism combined with a high-performance arc-chute system, rather than relying on a conventional thermal-magnetic latch. When a severe overcurrent is detected, the magnetic force acts almost instantly to open the contacts, and the arc is rapidly extinguished in the splitter plates. The result is near-instantaneous fault isolation on the first current half-wave, minimizing energy let-through.

What are the typical applications for a high speed breaker like the WCM9Z? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The WCM9Z is ideal for capacitor bank switching, DC systems (such as battery banks, data centers, and EV charging), high-inrush motor circuits, generator outputs, and critical bus-tie or incomer positions. It is also used in photovoltaic (PV) string/combiner protection, energy storage systems, and anywhere that equipment damage from a short circuit would be disproportionately costly compared with the breaker itself.

Why is fast tripping especially important for capacitor switching? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Capacitor banks draw high inrush currents and can produce severe transient overcurrents during switching. A standard breaker may allow these transients to damage the capacitors or contactors. The WCM9Z clears faults before the peak let-through energy reaches damaging levels, protecting the capacitor cells, contactors, and associated switchgear from premature failure or catastrophic rupture.

Can the WCM9Z be used in DC applications? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Yes. The WCM9Z is suitable for DC circuits, including battery energy storage, DC bus ties, and EV charging infrastructure. DC arcs have no natural current zero-crossing, so a dedicated DC-rated design with appropriate pole configuration and voltage rating is essential. When ordering, specify the DC voltage (e.g., DC 250V/500V/750V) and the pole arrangement so that the correct interrupting rating is selected.

Does the WCM9Z comply with IEC 60947-2? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Yes. The WCM9Z is designed and type-tested in accordance with IEC 60947-2 (low-voltage switchgear and controlgear — circuit-breakers). This standard defines rated voltage, rated current, short-circuit breaking capacity (Icu/Ics), tripping characteristics, and dielectric and mechanical endurance requirements. Compliance ensures interchangeability and predictable performance in IEC-based installations worldwide.

What ODM/OEM customization options are available for the WCM9Z? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Westhomes offers ODM/OEM services including custom branding and laser marking, auxiliary contact and shunt-trip configurations, customer-specific trip curves, packaging, and labeling in the target language. For DC or special-application projects, the internal mechanism and pole arrangement can be engineered to meet particular voltage and current requirements. MOQ and lead time are agreed per project.

How is the WCM9Z installed? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

The WCM9Z mounts on standard DIN rail or busbar within a low-voltage panelboard, switchgear cubicle, or capacitor-control cabinet, using front-connected or rear-connected terminals depending on the frame size. Installers must observe the correct phase sequence, torque the busbar or cable lugs to the specified value, maintain minimum creepage/clearance distances, and verify that the upstream/downstream protection coordination has been calculated. Always isolate power before installation and follow the wiring diagram in the manual.

What maintenance does the WCM9Z require? plus-square Created with Sketch Beta. minus-square Created with Sketch Beta.

Like all low-voltage switchgear, the WCM9Z should be inspected periodically: check terminal tightness, clean dust and arc-chute debris, verify mechanical operation by manually opening and closing, and confirm that the nameplate and tripping settings remain correct. Because fast-break mechanisms are sensitive, a routine electrical trip test or secondary-injection test (if fitted with an electronic release) is recommended annually or as dictated by the site maintenance plan. Contactors or auxiliary switches showing wear should be replaced promptly.
