In a 1P+N RCCB, the single phase conductor (L) is switched and monitored, and the neutral conductor (N) passes through the toroid. "Neutral protection" means the neutral pole is opened together with the phase when the device trips, so the load is fully isolated from both conductors rather than leaving neutral connected. This is important because a live neutral-to-earth fault can still present a shock hazard.
Both L and N pass through the same toroidal (zero-sequence) current transformer. Under healthy conditions the current on L equals the current returning on N, so their magnetic fields cancel and no flux is detected. When insulation fails or a person touches a live part, part of the current returns via earth instead of neutral; the toroid senses this imbalance, the trip relay operates, and the contacts open within a fraction of a second.
63A is the continuous current rating of the device per pole, sized for the largest single-phase sub-main circuits in a home or small commercial panel. It does not trip on overload — pair it with an MCB or fuse sized to the cable (e.g., a 40A or 50A MCB for the actual load). The 63A rating simply says the RCCB itself can carry that current without overheating.
The standard residential residual sensitivity is 30 mA (IΔn). At 30 mA the device provides additional protection against direct contact for people. For circuits in bathrooms, swimming pools, or wet locations, a 10 mA unit is often required; for protection against fire on large cable networks, 300 mA types are used upstream.
Connect the incoming phase to the terminal marked L (IN) and the incoming neutral to N (IN). Run the load phase and load neutral from the OUT terminals to the downstream branch circuits. The protective earth (PE) wire must never pass through the device or be connected to its terminals. Note the polarity marked on the unit — reversing L and N on some electronic types can prevent correct operation.
The 4P version is built for three-phase four-wire (3×L+N) circuits and monitors the sum of all four conductors; the 1P+N version is built for single-phase (L+N) 230V circuits and has one phase plus one neutral pole. Use 1P+N on single-phase sub-mains, socket-outlet groups, and individual appliances; use 4P only on three-phase incomers or three-phase loads.
Type AC responds to pure sinusoidal AC leakage only. Type A responds to AC plus pulsating DC residual currents, which is essential when the load includes switch-mode power supplies, LED drivers, washing-machine inverter boards, or EV chargers. Modern residential loads increasingly contain electronics, so Type A is usually the safer and code-compliant choice; pure Type AC is being phased out in many markets for new installations.
No. An RCCB trips only on residual (earth leakage) current. It will not protect the cables from overheating under overload, nor from a line-to-neutral short circuit. Install an MCB upstream or on the same rail (or choose an RCBO, which combines both functions in one unit) for overcurrent and short-circuit protection.
Clip it onto a 35 mm DIN rail in the distribution box, tighten conductors to the nameplate torque, and route incoming and outgoing wires cleanly. Press the "T" test button once a month to confirm tripping; if it fails to trip, replace the unit. Every one to two years, an electrician should inspect terminal tightness and check for damp, dust, or rodent damage inside the enclosure.
It is designed to IEC 61008-1 (RCCB without integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses), rated up to 440V AC. CE marking confirms compliance with the applicable European directives. Verify the IΔn value, Type (AC/A), and the number of poles against the installation design, and ensure the certificate/copy of the test report is available for the local electrical inspector.
