It is a residual current circuit breaker for single-phase 230V circuits, with one switched phase pole and one switched neutral pole, both monitored by an internal toroidal CT. It provides protection against electric shock and earth leakage, but — like all RCCBs — no protection against overload or short circuit, which must be supplied by an upstream MCB.
Live (L) and neutral (N) pass through a ring-shaped current transformer. When no leakage exists, the outgoing current on L equals the returning current on N and the magnetic fields cancel. When current leaks to earth through insulation failure, a wet appliance, or a person touching a live part, the two currents no longer balance; the CT detects the residual flux, the trip solenoid fires, and the contacts open almost instantaneously.
"1P+N" indicates one protected/switched phase pole plus a switched neutral pole, but only the phase pole has overcurrent-related mechanical rating structure; the neutral pole is opened in step with the phase. A true "2P" RCCB treats both poles symmetrically. For most single-phase residential sub-mains, 1P+N is the standard, compact form factor.
63A is the maximum continuous current the unit can carry at 230V, 50/60 Hz, without overheating. It is typically chosen for single-phase sub-main distribution boards, large socket-outlet groups, or feeds to a sub-panel. The downstream MCBs are chosen to match the actual cable size and load, not the RCCB's 63A rating.
30 mA (IΔn) is the universal standard for additional shock protection in residential and general-purpose circuits. It trips fast enough to protect a person under normal touch-voltage conditions. Use 10 mA in bathrooms, near swimming pools, or for outdoor circuits, and 100–300 mA upstream only for fire protection or equipment monitoring, never as the sole human-protection device.
Type AC detects only sinusoidal AC leakage. Type A detects AC plus pulsating DC leakage, which appears when devices with rectifier stages (TVs, computers, LED drivers, inverter washers, EV chargers) develop an earth fault. Most wiring rules now favor Type A for new single-phase installations because of the prevalence of electronic loads; Type AC is acceptable only on purely resistive, traditional circuits.
Connect the incoming phase to L (IN) and incoming neutral to N (IN); run load phase and load neutral from the OUT terminals to downstream MCBs. The protective earth (PE) wire runs straight to the earth bar and must not pass through the device. Observe the marked L and N polarity on the label; reversing them can prevent correct operation on electronic-type devices.
An RCCB trips only on residual (earth leakage) current. An RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent) combines the same leakage sensing with a thermal-magnetic MCB in one unit, so it also trips on overload and short circuit. If you need per-circuit protection with only one device per circuit, use an RCBO; if you want one common RCCB upstream of several MCBs, use a 1P+N RCCB.
It snaps onto a 35 mm DIN rail and typically occupies 2 pole-widths. With the circuit energized, press the "T" test button once a month; it should trip immediately. If it does not trip, the device is faulty and must be replaced, because it provides no protection even though power remains on. Reset by moving the handle fully to OFF and then ON.
It is built to IEC 61008-1 (RCCB without integral overcurrent protection for household and similar uses), rated up to 440V AC. CE marking confirms conformity with the Low Voltage and EMC Directives. Always confirm the declared rated residual operating current (IΔn), the Type (AC/A), and the breaking/tripping characteristic in the datasheet, and keep the certificate available for inspection.
